The sūtra says: 'The Master of Secrets addressed the Buddha, saying: "How does the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha attain sarvajñajñāna (all-knowledge wisdom)? He broadly expounds and distributes the various paths, expounding the sarvajñajñāna. Each accords with their sounds and speeches and abides in various deportments; the path of sarvajñajñāna has a single flavor. World-Honoured One! Just as earth, water, fire, wind, and space, their intrinsic nature pervading all places, none departs from the gate of the letter A."' Therefore Vajrapāṇi asked Mahāvairocana Tathāgata: 'With this wisdom, what is the cause? What is the root? What is the ultimate?' The Buddha told Vajrapāṇi: 'Bodhicitta is the cause, compassion is the root, and skillful means is the ultimate. Master of Secrets! What is awakening (bodhi)? It means knowing one's own mind as it really is, which is the single mark of the letter A, neither one nor different.'
