In the fifth: 'mental wildernesses': states of rigidity of mind, states of rubbish-like mind, states of stump-like mind. 'Doubts the Teacher': doubts regarding the Teacher's physical body or regarding his qualities. Doubting regarding the physical body, he doubts: 'Does a physical body adorned with the thirty-two marks of an excellent man truly exist or not?' Doubting regarding his qualities, he doubts: 'Does an omniscient knowledge capable of knowing past, future, and present truly exist or not?' 'Hesitates': examining, he is troubled, falls into distress, and cannot decide. 'Does not make up his mind': does not obtain the resolution, 'This is so.' 'Does not become clearly confident': having entered into his qualities, he is unable to become confident and untroubled by way of doubtlessness. 'For ardor': for making effort that burns up the defilements. 'For devotion': for repeated application. 'For perseverance': for continuous action. 'For striving': for the purpose of exerting. 'This is the first mental wilderness': this first state of rigidity of mind, known as doubt in the Teacher, is thus unabandoned in this monk.
