Now, expanding upon the Middle Section on Morality, he said: "Or whereas some venerable recluses..." and so forth. Here, this is the explanation of the obscure words: "Offerings given in faith" means given with faith in kamma, its result, this world, and the next world. It means not given in this way: "This is my relative" or "friend", or "He will do this in return", or "This was done by him previously." For what is given in this way is not called an offering given in faith. "Food" is just the primary example of the teaching; but in meaning, it is stated in its entirety: having eaten food given in faith, wearing robes, using lodgings, and utilizing medicine for the sick.
