By the words ‘at one time the Blessed One’, showing that at that time the Blessed One was no longer present, he establishes the final passing of the physical body. By that, [indicating,] ‘Even that Blessed One, the proclaimer of such a noble Dhamma, the bearer of the ten powers, whose body was like a mass of diamonds, has attained final passing; what hope in life should be aroused by anyone else?’, he stirs a sense of urgency in people intoxicated with the vanity of life, and arouses their enthusiasm for the True Dhamma.
