Suppiyopi kho paribbājakoti suppiyoti tassa nāmaṃ. Pi-kāro maggappaṭipannasabhāgatāya puggalasampiṇḍanattho. Kho-kāro padasandhikaro, byañjanasiliṭṭhatāvasena vutto. Paribbājakoti sañjayassa antevāsī channaparibbājako. Idaṃ vuttaṃ hoti – ‘‘yadā bhagavā taṃ addhānamaggaṃ paṭipanno, tadā suppiyopi paribbājako paṭipanno ahosī’’ti. Atītakālattho hettha hoti-saddo.

“Suppiya the wanderer too” (suppiyopi kho paribbājako): “Suppiya” is his name. The particle ‘pi’ has the sense of joining persons together because of the similarity of being on the highway. The particle ‘kho’ makes a sentence connection, stated for the sake of euphonic smoothness of the syllables. “Wanderer” (paribbājako): a cloth-wearing wanderer, a pupil of Sañjaya. This is what is said: “When the Blessed One set out on that highway, at that time Suppiya the wanderer also set out.” For here the word ‘hoti’ has the sense of the past tense.
