"This, monks, the Tathāgata understands": monks, this entire fourfold theorist position the Tathāgata knows in various ways. Then, showing the manner of understanding it, he says: "these grounds for views," etc. There, the views themselves are called "grounds for views." Moreover, even the cause of views is also a ground for views. As he said: "Which are the eight grounds for views? The aggregates also are a ground for views, ignorance also, contact also, perception also, thought also, improper attention also, bad friendship also, the voice of another also is a ground for views." "The aggregates are the cause, the aggregates are the condition in the sense of originating in dependence on the ground for views; thus the aggregates also are a ground for views. Ignorance is the cause… pe… bad friendship is the cause. The voice of another is the cause, the voice of another is the condition in the sense of originating in dependence on the ground for views; thus the voice of another also is a ground for views" (Paṭisambhidāmagga 1.124). "Grasped thus": first, the grounds for views called views are grasped thus, taken, the meaning is: made to occur, as "The self and the world are eternal." "Adhered to thus": touched repeatedly and adhered to through an unsuspicious mind, concluded as "This alone is the truth, other is hollow." But the grounds for views called causes, being grasped in such a way as to originate views, are grasped in terms of the object, in terms of occurrence, and in terms of repetition. They are adhered to through the manner of repeated grasping because of not seeing danger. "Having such a destiny": having a destiny such as one of the destinies of hell, the animal realm, or the ghost sphere. "Having such a future existence": this is a synonym for the preceding word; what is said is: having a future world of such a kind.
