Evaṃ avaṇṇabhūmiyaṃ tādilakkhaṇaṃ dassetvā idāni vaṇṇabhūmiyaṃ dassetuṃ ‘‘mamaṃ vā, bhikkhave, pare vaṇṇaṃ bhāseyyu’’ntiādimāha. Tattha pareti ye keci pasannā devamanussā. Ānandanti etenāti ānando, pītiyā etaṃ adhivacanaṃ. Sumanassa bhāvo somanassaṃ, cetasikasukhassetaṃ adhivacanaṃ. Uppilāvino bhāvo uppilāvitattaṃ. Kassa uppilāvitattanti? Cetasoti. Uddhaccāvahāya uppilāpanapītiyā etaṃ adhivacanaṃ. Idhāpi dvīhi padehi saṅkhārakkhandho, ekena vedanākkhandho vutto.

Having thus shown the quality of impartiality on the plane of dispraise, now, in order to show it on the plane of praise, he said: 'Monks, if others should speak praise of me...' and so forth. Therein, 'others' means any devas and humans who have confidence. They delight by this, thus it is 'delight' (ānanda); this is a designation for joy (pīti). The state of a happy mind is 'mental joy' (somanassa); this is a designation for mental pleasure (cetasikasukha). The state of floating up is 'elation' (uppilāvitatta). Elation of what? Of the mind. This is a designation for joy that causes floating up and brings about agitation. Here also, the aggregate of mental formations is spoken of with two terms, and the aggregate of feeling with one.
