In the definition of the assemblies of disciples: the first assembly of the Blessed One Vipassī had four factors: they were all 'come, monk' [monks], all had bowls and robes generated through psychic power, all had come without being summoned, and indeed it was on the fifteenth-day Uposatha. Then the Teacher sat down taking a fan and delivered the Uposatha recitation. The same method applies to the second and third assemblies as well, and likewise to all the assemblies of the remaining Buddhas. But because the assembly of our Blessed One took place in the period of his first awakening, whereas this discourse was spoken at a later time, therefore, not ending with 'I now have one assembly of disciples, monks', it was said: 'there was'.
