Iti bhagavā – ‘‘ito so, bhikkhave’’tiādinā nayena kappaparicchedavasena pubbenivāsaṃ dassetvā idāni tesaṃ buddhānaṃ jātiparicchedādivasena dassetuṃ vipassī, bhikkhavetiādimāha. Tattha āyuparicchede parittaṃ lahukanti ubhayametaṃ appakasseva vevacanaṃ. Yañhi appakaṃ, taṃ parittañceva lahukañca hoti.

Thus the Blessed One, having shown past lives by way of the determination of the aeon in the manner beginning with ‘ninety-one aeons ago, monks,’ now spoke the passage beginning with ‘Vipassī, monks,’ in order to show them by way of the determination of birth, and so forth. In that context, regarding the determination of the lifespan: ‘limited’ and ‘short’ are both synonyms for ‘trifling’. For whatever is trifling is both limited and short.
