‘Of a certain’ (aññatarassa): in this passage, although it is said ‘a certain’, nevertheless it should be understood that he was the senior Great Brahmā in this world system. ‘The world will surely perish, alas, good sirs!’ (nassati vata bho loko): he, it is said, made this utterance resound in such a way that the Brahmās of the ten-thousandfold world system heard it and all assembled. ‘In which’ (yatra hi nāma): in which world. ‘Appeared before [him]’ (purato pāturahosi): he appeared together with those ten thousand Brahmās. ‘Having little dust in their eyes by nature’ (apparajakkhajātikā): those who have little, slight dust of lust, hatred, and delusion in their eye made of wisdom; those of such an intrinsic nature are ‘having little dust in their eyes by nature’. ‘From not hearing’ (assavanatā): from not hearing [the Dhamma]. ‘There will be’ (bhavissanti): he shows that, having accumulated merit under previous Buddhas by way of the ten bases of meritorious action, fully mature like lotuses awaiting the contact of the sun's rays, longing only for the teaching of the Dhamma, fit to descend into the noble plane at the end of a four-line verse—not one, not two, but many hundreds of thousands will be knowers of the Dhamma.
