Now, in the definition of the pairs of disciples: 'Khaṇḍa and Tissa' means Khaṇḍa and Tissa. Between them, Khaṇḍa was a younger brother from the same father, while Tissa was the son of the royal chaplain. Khaṇḍa reached the pinnacle of the perfection of wisdom, while Tissa reached the pinnacle of the perfection of concentration. 'Foremost' means supreme by virtue of their incomparable qualities compared with all others, excepting the Blessed One Vipassī. 'An auspicious pair' means an auspicious pair simply by being the foremost. 'Abhibhū and Sambhava' means Abhibhū and Sambhava. Between them, Abhibhū reached the pinnacle of the perfection of wisdom. Having gone together with the Blessed One Sikhī from Aruṇavatī to the Brahmā world, demonstrating various miracles to the assembly of Brahmās and teaching the Dhamma, he pervaded the ten-thousand-fold world system with darkness; and for those in whom spiritual urgency had arisen wondering, 'What is this?', he pervaded it with light, resolved: 'Let all see my form and hear my voice', and made his voice heard as he recited the two verses beginning 'Rouse yourselves' (SN 1.185). Sambhava reached the pinnacle of the perfection of concentration.
