“Desire and lust”: thus, weak lust and strong lust arise regarding an object thought about with unwholesome applied thought, for this is craving here. “Desire” is a designation for weak lust. “Attachment” is the strong determination: ‘I’ and ‘mine’. “Appropriation” is the act of taking possession by way of craving and view. “Avarice” is the inability to endure sharing with others. Therefore the ancients state the word-meaning thus: “Because it occurs thinking: ‘May this wonderful thing be mine alone, may it not be a wonderful thing for others,’ it is called avarice.” “Safeguarding” is guarding well by closing doors, locking chests, and so forth. “It occasions” means cause (adhikaraṇa); this is a name for a reason. “On account of safeguarding” (ārakkhādhikaraṇaṃ) is an abstract neuter noun, meaning: because of safeguarding. Among “the taking up of sticks” and so on, taking up a stick to restrain others is ‘taking up of sticks’. Taking up a single-edged sword or the like is ‘taking up of weapons’. “Quarrel” is bodily quarrel or verbal quarrel. Each preceding conflict is “strife”. Each succeeding one is “dispute”. “Tuvaṃtuvaṃ” is disrespectful speech: ‘you, you!’
