‘For much of the night with talk on the Dhamma’: with other talk on the Dhamma outside the canonical text, and with the thanksgiving for the rest-house, as if bringing down the heavenly Gaṅgā, as if pressing out a great honeycomb measuring a yojana and giving honey-drink to drink, having instructed and gladdened [them] for much of the night, he dismissed them. ‘Far advanced’ means gone by, finished, having reached depletion and passing away. ‘An empty house’: there was no separate empty house as such; rather, right there on one side, having enclosed it with a curtain wall, they prepared a couch, [thinking,] ‘Here the Teacher will rest.’ The Blessed One, [thinking,] ‘Being used in all four postures, this will be of great fruit for them,’ took the lion’s rest there. With reference to that, it was said: ‘he entered an empty house.’
