“For how long that Blessed One has been of great wisdom!” means: it is not possible to say, limiting it by saying, “For this long”; rather, for so long a time, for an extremely long time indeed, that Blessed One has been of great wisdom. “Do you not?” means: what do you think? Then, wishing to resolve this question himself, he said: “This is not wonderful, sirs, that now, having fulfilled the perfections and broken the heads of the three Māras on the throne of awakening, that Blessed One, having penetrated unshared knowledge, should be of great wisdom. What is wonderful about this? But when his awakening was not yet ripe, while standing in partial knowledge even at a time with lust and the like, of his state of great wisdom alone will I tell you, sirs!” And bringing forth the explanation hidden in [past] existence, to show it he said, “In the past, sir,” and so forth.
