Evaṃ puṇṇāya puṇṇamāyāti imasmiṃ padadvaye ca attho veditabbo.
"Komudiyā" means on the day of the white water-lilies (kumuda). At that time, it is said, the white water-lilies are in full bloom; because they are present at that time, it is "komudī". "Cātumāsiniyā" means on the fourth-month day; for because it is the conclusion of four months, it is "cātumāsī"; but here it is called "cātumāsinī". "Puṇṇāya" means full, complete, through the fullness of the month, the fullness of the season, and the fullness of the year. The moon is called "mā"; because it is full at that time, it is "puṇṇamā". Thus the meaning in this pair of terms, "puṇṇāya puṇṇamāyā", should be understood.
