Pakudhoti tassa nāmaṃ. Kaccāyanoti gottaṃ. Iti nāmagottaṃ saṃsanditvā pakudho kaccāyanoti vuccati. Sītudakapaṭikkhittako esa, vaccaṃ katvāpi udakakiccaṃ na karoti, uṇhodakaṃ vā kañjiyaṃ vā labhitvā karoti, nadiṃ vā maggodakaṃ vā atikkamma – ‘‘sīlaṃ me bhinna’’nti vālikathūpaṃ katvā sīlaṃ adhiṭṭhāya gacchati. Evarūpo nissirīkaladdhiko esa.

Pakudha was his name. Kaccāyana was his clan name. Joining the name and clan name together in this way, he is called Pakudha Kaccāyana. He was one who avoided cold water: even after defecating he would not perform the water duty [with it]; he would only do so upon obtaining hot water or rice-gruel; and having crossed a river or water on a road, thinking, 'My virtue is broken,' he would make a mound of sand, undertake virtue, and go on. He was of such an unpropitious doctrine.
