Tatrāyaṃ padasambandho – so bhagavā itipi arahaṃ itipi sammāsambuddho…pe… itipi bhagavāti. Iminā ca iminā ca kāraṇenāti vuttaṃ hoti. Tattha ārakattā arīnaṃ, arānañca hatattā, paccayādīnaṃ arahattā, pāpakaraṇe rahābhāvāti, imehi tāva kāraṇehi so bhagavā arahanti veditabbotiādinā nayena mātikaṃ nikkhipitvā sabbāneva cetāni padāni visuddhimagge buddhānussatiniddese vitthāritānīti tato nesaṃ vitthāro gahetabbo.
Therein, this is the connection of words: That Blessed One is also an arahant, also a fully awakened Buddha ... and so forth ... also a Blessed One. 'For this reason and for that reason' is what is meant. Therein, because he is far (āraka) from enemies (ari), and because the spokes (ara) have been destroyed, because of his worthiness (arahatta) of requisites and the like, and because of the absence of secretiveness (raha) in doing evil—for these reasons, first of all, that Blessed One is to be known as an 'arahant'. Setting out the matrix in such a manner, all these words have been elaborated in the Path of Purification in the explanation of the recollection of the Buddha; therefore, their elaboration should be taken from there.
