"Approached the Blessed One": where the Blessed One was, there he went; the meaning is that he approached into the presence of the Blessed One. "Stood to one side": without jostling either the Blessed One or the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, having paid homage to the Blessed One, he stood alone in a place suitable for him to stand. "Silent, completely silent": in whichever direction he looked around, in that very direction there was absolute silence; this is the meaning. For there, not even a single bhikkhu had any restlessness of hands or feet, nor was there the sound of a cough; and not a single bhikkhu looked at the king or at the royal retinue, adorned with all ornaments, standing in front of the Blessed One accompanied by theatrical performers. All sat looking only at the Blessed One.
