In the doctrine of Nāṭaputta: ‘restrained by the fourfold restraint’ means restrained by a restraint of four parts. ‘Warded off from all water’: the meaning is one for whom all water is warded off, one by whom all cold water is rejected. For he is one who has the perception of a living being in cold water; therefore, he does not use it. ‘Joined with all warding’: joined with all warding off of evil. ‘Cleansed of evil by all warding’: one whose evil is cleansed by all warding off of evil. ‘Pervaded by all warding’: touched by all warding off of evil. ‘Subdued in self’ means one whose mind has reached the peak. ‘Restrained in self’ means one of restrained mind. ‘Steadied in self’ means one whose mind is firmly established. In his doctrine there is even something in conformity with the Dispensation, but because of the impurity of the view, all of it turned into mere wrong view.
