'Uprooted is this king, monks' (khatāyaṃ, bhikkhave, rājā) means this king is uprooted, monks. 'Ruined is he' (upahatāyaṃ) means he is ruined. This is what is meant: 'Monks, this king is uprooted, ruined, his footing shattered; thus by himself has he uprooted himself, such that no footing arose for him.' 'Dust-free' (virajaṃ) means free from the dust of lust and so forth. 'Free of stain' (vītamalaṃ) because the stain of lust and the like has vanished. 'The Dhamma-eye' (dhammacakkhuṃ) means an eye for Dhammas, or an eye consisting of the Dhamma; in other passages this is a designation for the three paths. Here, however, it designates only the path of stream-entry. This is what is meant: had he not killed his father, sitting right here on this seat, he would have attained the path of stream-entry; but through association with bad friends, an obstacle arose for him. Even so, because he approached the Tathāgata and went for refuge to the Three Jewels, therefore, owing to the greatness of my Dispensation—just as someone who committed manslaughter might be released with a mere fistful of flowers as punishment—even so, having been reborn in the Lohakumbhī hell, descending for thirty thousand years until reaching the bottom floor, and ascending for thirty thousand years until reaching the upper rim again, he will be freed. This also, it is said, was spoken by the Blessed One, but was not included in the Pāli text.
