In order to show just that approach to engagement by way of feeling which is evident to him in the immaterial meditation subject, he spoke beginning with: "Joy too, lord of the devas, I say..." There, "in two ways" means in two manners, in two portions, is the meaning. "Such joy should not be cultivated": such joy connected with household life should not be cultivated. Joy connected with household life means: "Therein, what are the six kinds of joy connected with household life? In one who regards as an acquisition the acquisition of forms cognizable by the eye that are desirable, charming, agreeable, delightful, and associated with worldly bait, or who recollects what was formerly acquired, past, ceased, and changed, joy arises. Such joy as this is called joy connected with household life"—thus it is joy based on the strands of sensual pleasure spoken of in the six doors.
