Whatever mental phenomena cognizable by the mind one adverts to such that lust and so forth arise, or covetousness and so forth come into range in the manner, “Oh, would that whatever property and equipment belong to others were mine!”—such phenomena are not to be cultivated. Those phenomena by way of loving-kindness and so forth, such as “May all beings be free from enmity,” or those phenomena of the three elders, are to be cultivated. For the three elders, it is said, made an agreement on the day of entering the rains retreat: “Unwholesome thoughts such as thoughts of sensual desire must not be thought.” Then on the day of the invitation ceremony, the senior elder of the Saṅgha asked the junior of the Saṅgha: “Friend, in these three months, how far did you allow your mind to run?” “Venerable sir, I did not allow it to run outside the boundary of my living cell.” He asked the second: “And you, friend?” “Venerable sir, I did not allow it to run outside my dwelling house.” Then both asked the senior elder: “And you, venerable sir?” “Friends, I did not allow it to run outside my own internal five aggregates.” “Venerable sir, you have done what is difficult to do!” Such a phenomenon cognizable by the mind is to be cultivated.
