"Attainment of joy" (vedapaṭilābha) means the attainment of satisfaction. "War between the devas and asuras": the battle between the devas and the asuras. "Engaged" (samupabyūḷha) means entered upon, as if forehead had come to strike forehead. It is said that sometimes their battle took place upon the surface of the great ocean; there, however, there was no slaughter of one another by slashing or piercing, but like a fight between wooden rams, it was merely victory or defeat. Sometimes the devas won, sometimes the asuras. In that connection, referring to that battle in which the devas conquered the asuras so that they would not return, he said the words beginning "On that occasion, venerable sir". "Both of these": both of these things. "The devas alone will partake of both kinds of nutritive essence here in the deva world"—reflecting thus, strong zest and joy arose in him. "Accompanied by the rod" (sadaṇḍāvacara): moving with a rod; it was accompanied by the grasping of rods and grasping of weapons, showing that the rod and weapon were not laid down. "For absolute disenchantment" means entirely for the sake of becoming disenchanted with the round of rebirths; everything [else here] was indeed spoken in the Mahāgovindasutta.
