"Wealthy householders" means wealthy householder magnates. For they have a store of great wealth and grain, therefore they are called "wealthy". "Many thousands" means an immeasurable number even by thousands. Other than Sunakkhatta, it is said, no one else was able to assemble such a great assembly. It was on that very account that the Blessed One wandered about keeping Sunakkhatta with him for such a long time.
