“Dedicated to the Blessed One”: having represented thus: “The Blessed One is my Teacher, I fulfill the instruction of the Blessed One.” “Being who, what do you renounce?”: an applicant would renounce the one asked of, or the one asked of would renounce the applicant. But you are neither the applicant nor the one asked of; this being so, foolish man, being who, being what sort of person, what do you renounce?—this is what he shows. “See, foolish man”: see, empty man. “And how far you have failed in this”: as much as this is your failure, as much as is your fault, so much is the offense—thus I, Bhaggava, attributed the offense to him; this is what he shows.
