Thus, having shown the connection of the passage, ‘The Blessed One does not perform a miracle with this much discourse,’ he began the teaching ‘And I know the primordial beginning,’ now showing the connection of this statement: ‘He does not declare the primordial beginning.’ Therein, ‘And I know the primordial beginning’ means: Bhaggava, I know the primordial beginning and the lineage of the world’s origination. ‘And that I understand’ means not only the primordial beginning, but I understand that primordial beginning; and further beyond that, beginning from virtue and concentration up to omniscience, I understand. ‘And understanding that, I do not misapprehend’ means that even while understanding that, I do not misapprehend through craving, views, or conceit, thinking: ‘I know this.’ He shows: there is no misapprehension for the Tathāgata. ‘Inwardly peace is known’ means that the extinguishment of defilements is known within oneself by oneself. ‘Knowing which, the Tathāgata’ means knowing which extinguishment of defilements, the Tathāgata. ‘Does not come to ruin’ means that, unlike the sectarians who do not know Nibbāna, he does not come to ruin, suffering, and misfortune.
