Early in the morning, having undertaken the observance day factors, having given alms in the morning to the Saṅgha headed by the Buddha, and after the monks had gone to the monastery, he was troubled in the house by the noise of small and big children, and set out to the presence of the Teacher, thinking, 'I will listen to the Dhamma.' Therefore it is said: 'went out from Rājagaha in broad daylight.' There, 'in broad daylight' means the middle of the day is past noon; the meaning is that he set out in what was daylight of the day, just past midday. 'Secluded' means withdrawn, having drawn back the mind from various sense objects such as forms, gone to solitude by way of pursuing delight in absorption. 'Inspiring to the mind' means developing the mind; and for one who adverted and attended to it, the mind became free of hindrances, elevated, and expanded.
