'Said this' means that while coming along the way, because he heard their talk, he spoke this statement beginning with 'Indeed, these [wanderers of other sects].' There, 'other sectarians' means those sectarians who are different in view, in outward appearance, in conduct, in behaviour, in mode of living, and in deportment; hence 'other sectarians.' 'Having met and gathered' means in a place where they have met, gathered, and sat in a heap. 'Wilderness and forest groves' means wilderness and forest groves that are remote lodgings freed from the vicinity of a village. 'Remote' means very far away, devoid of human vicinity. 'Quiet' means having subdued sounds even from the sound of travellers passing by the vicinity of the monastery. 'With little commotion' means having little noise, in the sense of indistinct sounds. 'Free from drafts' means free from the breeze of people moving inside. 'Suitable for human secrecy' means suitable and fitting for humans doing private things. 'Favourable for seclusion' means suitable for solitude. Thus the householder Sandhāna, thinking, 'Oh, my Teacher, who frequents such lodgings!' raised his hands in veneration, placed them on his head, and uttering this inspired utterance, sat down.
