"Having made them quiet": having made them noiseless and quiet. He, it is said, thought: "The recluse Gotama does not answer even a single question, nor does he have much conversation; but these [monks], from the very beginning, both comply with and praise the recluse Gotama. Let me silence them and speak myself." He did so. Hence it is said: "Having made them quiet." In "we hold the doctrine of ascetic scrupulousness" and so forth: we advocate ascetic scrupulousness; taking only that as essential with our minds, we go about; with our bodies too we adhere to it; we dwell engaged in various practices of self-mortification—this is the meaning.
