“He becomes one who sits in view” means he sits in the range of humans, in a place of viewing. Standing where they can see him, he performs the bat observance, scorches himself with the five fires, stands on one foot, worships the sun. Even one who has gone forth in the Dispensation, having undertaken ascetic practices, lies down all night and then performs austerities within the range of human sight: he makes a robe-hut in the late afternoon, packs it away when the sun has risen, and having known that humans have arrived, he strikes the gong, places his robe on his head, steps down to the walkway, and takes a broom and sweeps the monastery courtyard.
