"He is envious and stingy": he is endowed with envy, characterized by begrudging others' honour and the like, and with the fivefold stinginess, characterized by hoarding in regard to dwellings, families, gains, recognition, and the Dhamma. "He is deceitful and hypocritical": he is endowed with deceitfulness, characterized by roguishness, and with hypocrisy, characterized by concealing what has been done. "He is stubborn and arrogant": he is endowed with stubbornness, characterized by being cold, merciless, and stiff, and with arrogance, characterized by conceiving oneself to have surpassed others. "He has evil wishes": he is endowed with evil wishes, characterized by desiring to be esteemed for virtues one does not have. "He falls under the influence of evil wishes": he comes under the sway of those very base desires. "He holds wrong view": he is possessed of improper view which proceeds in the manner such as 'there is nothing given' and so forth. "Holding an extremist view": that very view is called 'holding an extremist view' because it grasps the extreme of annihilation; the meaning is that he is endowed with that. In "firmly adhering to his own views" and so forth, one's own view is 'sandiṭṭhi'; he touches upon—takes hold of and professes—only his own view, thus he is one who firmly adheres to his own views. 'Ādhāna' is called firm and well-established; he holds [it] having made it so, thus he is 'tenacious in holding'. Like Ariṭṭha, he cannot be made to relinquish it, thus he is 'difficult to dissuade'. "If these": if these [faults].
