"Here, Nigrodha, an ascetic": thus the Blessed One, having shown the text on the defilements, [demonstrating] that the doctrine accepted by the other sectarians and the asceticism guarded by them is entirely defiled, now began the exposition in order to show the text on the purified [practice], saying, "Here, Nigrodha," and so on. There, "he is not pleased" and so forth should be understood precisely in terms of the opposites of what was said. And in all cases the construction should be understood in terms of both the coarse ascetic and the observer of ascetic practices. "Thus he is purified in that respect": thus, on account of this circumstance consisting of not being pleased and not having fulfilled his intention, he is purified and free from defilements; striving further and becoming one who is pure in meditation subject, he attains arahantship. In this manner the meaning should be understood in all cases.
