"Desire" means the craving that arises thus: 'Give me food.' "Lack of appetite" means not eating, a lack of vibrancy, bodily sluggishness; the meaning is a state of bodily weakness that produces a desire to lie down on account of food-induced drowsiness in those who have eaten food. "Old age" means evident old age. "Within a cock's flight": a cock's flight, meaning flying up from the roof-ridge of one village and landing on the roof-ridge of another village, exists among these [villages]; hence "within a cock's flight." There is also the reading kukkuṭasampādikā, with the meaning: a cock's stride, meaning cocks traveling on foot from one village to the next, exists among them. Both of these indicate densely packed habitation. "It will be filled, I think, like Avīci" means it will be filled without interval, like the great hell Avīci.
