Regarding painful progress and so forth, this is the detailed method: 'Herein, what is painful progress and slow direct knowledge? In one producing concentration with pain and difficulty, in one comprehending that state slowly, whatever wisdom, understanding ... and so on ... non-delusion, investigation of phenomena, right view—this is called painful progress and slow direct knowledge. Herein, what is painful progress and swift direct knowledge? In one producing concentration with pain and difficulty, in one comprehending that state swiftly, whatever wisdom, understanding ... and so on ... right view—this is called painful progress and swift direct knowledge. Herein, what is pleasant progress and slow direct knowledge? In one producing concentration without trouble and difficulty, in one comprehending that state slowly, whatever wisdom, understanding ... and so on ... right view—this is called pleasant progress and slow direct knowledge. Herein, what is pleasant progress and swift direct knowledge? In one producing concentration without trouble and difficulty, in one comprehending that state swiftly, whatever wisdom, understanding ... and so on ... right view—this is called pleasant progress and swift direct knowledge' (Vibhaṅga 801). This is the summary here; the detailed account, however, has been stated in the Visuddhimagga. The rest here should also be construed according to the previous method.
