Now, showing the virtues of the Blessed One in yet another manner, he said: "Whatever, bhante," and so forth. There, "by a faithful clansman": faithful clansmen are the bodhisattas of the past, future, and present. Therefore, what is meant is: "Whatever should be attained by an omniscient bodhisatta." But what should be attained by him? The nine transcendent dhammas. In "by one with aroused energy" and so forth, "energy, stamina," and so forth are all synonyms for energy. There, "by one with aroused energy" means by one with exerted energy. "By one of stamina" means by one endowed with stamina, with steadfast energy. "By human stamina": it means whatever should be attained through human stamina by that person endowed with stamina. The same method applies to the subsequent two phrases as well. "By human capacity to carry the yoke": by the great man who is capable of bearing that burden, the burden that must be borne by Buddhas of peerless burden. "Has been attained by the Blessed One": all of that which was to be attained by past and future Buddhas has been fully attained; he shows that not a single virtue of the Blessed One is lacking. "Devotion to sensual pleasures among sense objects": devotion to sensual pleasures among objective sensual pleasures. Just as other ascetics and brahmins, such as the matted-hair ascetic Keṇiya and others, saying, "Who knows the other world? Pleasant is the touch of the soft, hairy arm of this female wanderer!", amuse themselves with female wanderers wearing crests of hair, experiencing whatever visible forms and other sense objects present themselves, devoted to sensual pleasure—he shows that he is not devoted in this way.
