Atha kho cundo samaṇuddesoti ayaṃ thero dhammasenāpatissa kaniṭṭhabhātiko. Taṃ bhikkhū anupasampannakāle ‘‘cundo samaṇuddeso’’ti samudācaritvā therakālepi tatheva samudācariṃsu. Tena vuttaṃ – ‘‘cundo samaṇuddeso’’ti.
"Then the novice Cunda" means this elder was the younger brother of the General of the Dhamma. The monks addressed him as "the novice Cunda" at the time when he was unordained, and even at the time when he was an elder they addressed him in the same way. Therefore it was said: "the novice Cunda".
