“The young man Ambaṭṭha, however”: he, it is said, without producing even a measure of serene confidence of mind in the perfection of the Blessed One's physical form, thinking, “I will insult the Ten-Powered One,” untied the garment fastened around his belly, draped it around his neck, took the corner of the cloth with one hand, stepped up onto the walkway, and, showing now his arm, now his belly, now his back, making now a gesture with his hand, now a twitch of his eyebrow, said: “Master Gotama, do you have balance of elements? Do you not tire with your almsfood? Indeed, you appear to have an untiring appearance; for your limbs are plump, charming wherever you go. Thinking, ‘He has gone forth as a royal renouncer’ and ‘He is a Buddha,’ the multitude has conceived high esteem and gives fine, nutritious food. Look, sir, at the dwelling, like a painted hall, like a heavenly mansion. Look at this couch, look at this bolster—how could it be hard to live the ascetic life when dwelling in such a place?” Speaking such mocking talk, which called to mind his lack of proper conduct, therefore it was said: “The young man Ambaṭṭha, however, while pacing back and forth, exchanged courteous talk of some small sort with the seated Blessed One; and while standing, exchanged courteous talk of some small sort with the seated Blessed One.”
