‘‘Abhabbo, āvuso, khīṇāsavo bhikkhu sañcicca pāṇa’’ntiādi desanāsīsameva, sotāpannādayopi pana abhabbā. Puthujjanakhīṇāsavānaṃ nindāpasaṃsatthampi evaṃ vuttaṃ. Puthujjano nāma gārayho, mātughātādīnipi karoti. Khīṇāsavo pana pāsaṃso, kunthakipillikaghātādīnipi na karotīti.
‘It is impossible, friend, for a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed to intentionally [deprive] a living being [of life]’ and so forth is merely the heading of the teaching, but stream-enterers and the others too are incapable [of this]. This was also said for the sake of blaming the ordinary person and praising the one whose taints are destroyed. Indeed, an ordinary person is blameworthy: he commits even such deeds as killing his mother. But one whose taints are destroyed is praiseworthy: he does not commit even such deeds as killing small bugs or ants.
