“Qualities of good persons” means the qualities belonging to good persons. There, one who knows the Dhamma such as discourses and songs is one who knows the Dhamma. One who knows the meaning of whatever has been spoken is one who knows the meaning. One who knows oneself thus: “I am of such a measure in morality, concentration, and wisdom,” is one who knows oneself. One who knows the proper measure in receiving and using [requisites] is one who knows moderation. One who knows time thus: “This is the time for recitation, this is the time for interrogation, this is the time for spiritual effort and attainment,” is one who knows time. And here, five years is the time for recitation. Ten is for interrogation. This is very confined. But ten years is the time for recitation; twenty is for interrogation; after that, work should be done in spiritual effort. One who knows the eightfold assembly is one who knows the assembly. One who knows persons to be associated with and not to be associated with is one who knows persons.
