taught the seven grounds for being free of ten years in order to show the grounds by which one is free of ten years. The Elder, too, taking up that very teaching, said: “Seven grounds for being free of ten years: here, friends, a monk has keen desire for undertaking the training,” and so on. There, “here” means in this Dispensation. “Has keen desire for undertaking the training” means he has thick desire for fulfilling the threefold training. “And his love for undertaking the training in the future is unfaded” means he is endowed with unfaded love for fulfilling the training also in the future, on subsequent days and so forth. “For scrutinizing the Dhamma” means for investigating the Dhamma; this is a designation for insight. “In the discipline of desire” means in the removal of craving. “In seclusion” means in solitude. “In the arousing of energy” means in the fulfillment of bodily and mental energy. “In mindfulness and prudence” means both in mindfulness and in the state of prudence. “In penetration of view” means in seeing the path. The rest should be understood in the manner already spoken everywhere.
