‘Grounds for laziness’ (kusītavatthūni) means the grounds, foundations, reasons for sloth of a lazy, indolent person; this is the meaning. ‘Work is to be done’ means work such as caring for robes must be done. ‘Does not arouse energy’ means he does not arouse either kind of energy. ‘For the unattained’ means for the attainment of the state of absorption, insight, path, and fruit that has not been attained. ‘For the unreached’ means for the reaching of that very [state] which has not been reached. ‘For the unrealized’ means for the realization of that very [state] which has not been directly perceived. ‘This is the first’ means this sinking down, thinking ‘Come now, let me lie down,’ is the first ground for laziness. By this method, the meaning should be understood everywhere. Here, however, in ‘I think, filled with beans’ (māsācitaṃ maññe), ‘filled with beans’ means soaked beans. Just as soaked beans are heavy, so it is heavy: this is the meaning. ‘Has recovered from illness’ means having been ill, he has recovered afterwards.
