(g) Regarding 'leading to decline' and so forth: for one who has attained the first absorption, perceptions and attentions accompanied by sensual desires occur—this is concentration leading to decline. When mindfulness conforms to that [state] and remains steady, it is concentration leading to stability. Perceptions and attentions accompanied by initial thought occur—this is concentration leading to distinction. Perceptions and attentions accompanied by disenchantment occur, connected with dispassion—this is concentration leading to penetration. By this method, the meaning should be understood having expanded it to all attainments. But its detailed discussion has already been spoken in the Path of Purification.
