Samanuyuñjantanti samanuyuñjantu, ettha ca laddhiṃ pucchanto samanuyuñjati nāma, kāraṇaṃ pucchanto samanugāhati nāma, ubhayaṃ pucchanto samanubhāsati nāma. Satthārā vā satthāranti satthārā vā saddhiṃ satthāraṃ upasaṃharitvā – ‘‘kiṃ te satthā te dhamme sabbaso pahāya vattati, udāhu samaṇo gotamo’’ti. Dutiyapadepi eseva nayo.

“Let them cross-examine” means let them interrogate; and here, asking about one’s tenet is called ‘cross-examining’ (samanuyuñjati); asking about reasons is called ‘inquiring deeply’ (samanugāhati); asking about both is called ‘discussing together’ (samanubhāsati). “Or teacher with teacher” means comparing teacher with teacher: ‘Does your teacher live having abandoned those qualities completely, or does the ascetic Gotama?’ In the second phrase, too, this is the method.
