1.1.1.1

Yaṃ panetaṃ ‘‘evaṃ me suta’’ntiādikaṃ nidānaṃ, tattha evanti nipātapadaṃ. Metiādīni nāmapadāni. Sāvatthiyaṃ viharatīti ettha vīti upasaggapadaṃ, haratīti ākhyātapadanti iminā tāva nayena padavibhāgo veditabbo.

As for this origin story beginning with ‘Thus have I heard’, here ‘thus’ (evaṃ) is a particle. ‘Me’ (me) and so forth are nouns. In ‘he dwells at Sāvatthī’ (sāvatthiyaṃ viharati), here ‘vi-’ is a prefix, and ‘harati’ is a verb: in this way first of all should the division of words be understood.
