'For one who mutilates' (chindato) means for one who cuts off the hands and so forth of others. 'For one who has [others] mutilate' (chedāpayato) means for one who causes others to cut [them] off. 'For one who tortures' (pacato) means for one who afflicts with a stick. 'For one who has [others] torture' (pacāpayato) means for one who causes others to afflict with a stick and so forth. 'For one who causes grief, for one who has [others] cause grief' (socato socāpayato) means both for one who personally causes grief by taking another's property and so forth, and for one who causes others to do so. 'For one who torments, for one who has [others] torment' (kilamato kilamāpayato) means both for one who personally torments [others] through cutting off food, throwing [them] into prison, and so forth, and for one who causes others to torment [them]. 'For one who trembles, for one who causes trembling' (phandato phandāpayato) means for one who personally trembles at the time when another trembles, and for one who causes another to tremble. Thus throughout, the meaning is to be understood solely in terms of acting and causing to act.
