12.6.2.52

In the second [sutta]: 'In things that are prone to clinging' means in things of the three planes that are conditions for the four clingings. 'Contemplating gratification' means of one who is contemplating gratification. 'There' means in that mass of fire. 'Its fuel' means conditioned by that. 'Its clinging' is a synonym for the very same thing. 'Even so'—here the three realms of existence are like the mass of fire; the round of existence across the three planes is also just this; the foolish worldling dependent on the round of existence is like the man tending the fire; the worldling contemplating gratification performing wholesome and unwholesome kamma through the six doors by way of craving and so forth is like the throwing in of dry grass, cow dung, and so forth. And the producing of the suffering of the round again and again by the foolish worldling through rousing himself and accumulating the aforesaid kamma is like the growing of the mass of fire by the repeated throwing in of grass, cow dung, and so forth when they are consumed.
