in that manner, if from then on one commits no more offenses, that is called repentance. Keep this in mind: ‘Since we are now as if revived from death, from now on I will maintain śīla! From now on I will practice with diligence! From now on I will read and recite the Mahāyāna sūtras!’—at that time, at that moment, maintain such mindfulness. ‘I resolve that the vows I hold from this day forward will be endurable like a vajra!’ When one maintains such mindfulness, the noble being Vimalakīrti together with immeasurable bodhisattvas will stand before that person and empower them. The noble Samantabhadra will also act as the preceptor of repentance. The noble Kāśyapa will also act as the support for confession. Mañjuśrī, this is called the purification of sins; this is called liberation; this is called possessing śīla; this is called obtaining the station.” The Bhagavān again said to the bodhisattva mahāsattva Mañjuśrī: “If someone has broken or impaired each of the four root downfalls, the eight vows, the partial vows, the ten precepts, the refuge in the Three Jewels, the five precepts, the ten virtues, the moral discipline, and the vinaya, or has committed the five ānantaryas, or has committed the sin of denigrating the equal nature—unless it is perverse conduct—if they do not individually confess and repent, that person upon passing away will undoubtedly fall into the Avīci hell.” Mañjuśrī asked: “Bhagavān, why is it called the Avīci hell? For the sake of all sentient beings, may the Tathāgata please explain by what causes and conditions they fall there, the size and shape of that hell, and for how many kalpas its ripening suffering endures.” The Bhagavān said: “Mañjuśrī, you are exceedingly wise!
