attains unsurpassed, perfect awakening, I vow that for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, I will definitely establish all sentient beings in great nirvāṇa. Furthermore, I vow to bring all sentient beings to the complete perfection of the perfection of wisdom.' That is called 'accomplishing one's own welfare and the welfare of others.' Therefore, from the first arousal of the mind directed toward awakening, one is called 'endowed with the cause of awakening', 'endowed with the cause of sentient beings', 'endowed with the cause of the genuine ultimate', 'endowed with the thirty-seven factors harmonious with awakening', and 'the basis gathering all wholesome dharmas'. For that reason, a bodhisattva is called 'virtue', 'great virtue', and 'the root of virtue of all sentient beings'. He is also called 'the purifier of the physical, vocal, and mental actions of all sentient beings'. By purifying the three bad actions, no aspiration in the world surpasses arousing the mind directed toward unsurpassed, perfect awakening; it is the supreme, sacred, unsurpassed aspiration. When a bodhisattva mahāsattva first arouses the mind directed toward awakening, he must be endowed with five things. What are the five? Nature, practice, domain, quality, and generation. If a bodhisattva arouses the mind directed toward awakening in this manner, he is called a bodhisattva mahāsattva; he will indubitably attain unsurpassed, perfect awakening and practice the Great Vehicle. Therefore, by first arousing the mind directed toward awakening, all wholesome dharmas are gathered. A bodhisattva mahāsattva, after arousing the mind directed toward awakening, will attain unsurpassed, perfect awakening in accordance with how he practices. If one does not arouse the mind directed toward awakening, one will never attain awakening. Therefore, if one arouses the mind directed toward awakening, one will attain the basis of unsurpassed, perfect awakening
