I pulled the chariot with all my strength. My companion, being frail, could not pull it; therefore, the hell guardian Abang took a three-pronged iron trident, pierced his chest, and struck him with an iron hammer so that blood fell like rain. At that time, that man, unable to bear the agony of pain, cried out with loud wails of suffering, sometimes calling out "Father, Mother!" and sometimes crying out "Wife, son!", but to no avail. At that time, upon seeing him undergo such great suffering, compassion arose in me. Due to generating such great compassion, I aroused the mind of awakening. Then, on behalf of that sufferer, I besought the hell guardian Abang: "Please generate a little compassionate thought for this suffering person!" At that, the hell guardian grew enraged and, feeling hatred, seized the three-pronged iron trident and thrust it into the nape of my neck. Dying right there, I was freed from the Fire Chariot hell, and my unvirtuous demerits of a hundred aeons were purified. Thus, through arousing the mind directed toward unsurpassed, perfectly complete awakening, I was liberated from the Fire Chariot hell.' The Bhagavān said to Ānandarāja: 'The one who pulled the fiery chariot at that time was none other than myself today, and through arousing the mind of awakening, I quickly attained buddhahood.
