"If one definitively vows, 'I am a butcher,' then non-virtuous discipline is acquired as well. The adoption of non-virtuous discipline is acquired merely through one's own vow; one does not need to receive it from another. If one vows to adopt non-virtuous discipline for one or two days up to ten days, or for one year or two years, it is acquired accordingly in proportion to the duration of the vow made. Therefore, sinful and non-virtuous qualities only draw one down into the cycle of birth and death; there is no sense of ascending higher and higher. In this manner, non-virtuous discipline is acquired through that very entity; it is not like virtuous discipline."

From the Sūtra of Repaying the Kindness of the Buddha Who Has Great Skill in Means, this is the eighth chapter, entitled "Aniruddha."
